Four AI companion apps, tested on a South African card
HoneyPot, Janitor AI, Joyland and Moemate, judged on the things that actually bite here: whether the card goes through, what the images cost you in data, and how long support takes to answer.

HoneyPot is an adult AI companion app you can use from South Africa through any browser — nothing to install, no local app store listing. You design a companion's personality, then chat. Billing runs in US dollars, so a South African card statement will show a conversion.
Why an honest comparison looks different from South Africa
Every AI companion app claims the same three things on its home page, and from here at least one of those claims usually falls over: the card declines, the images drain a bundle, or the answer to a billing question arrives two days later. This comparison is written around those failures rather than around feature lists.
An app that works beautifully in California and declines your card in Kimberley is not a good app. It is a good app somewhere else.
The four apps here are not really competing for the same person. HoneyPot and Joyland want you to settle in with a companion. Janitor AI wants you browsing a huge community library. Moemate wants to live on your desktop and talk back. Working out which of those you actually are will save you more than any discount code.
Payment is where the South African experience diverges most sharply. These are all overseas merchants and most sit in an adult category, which is exactly the combination local banks treat with suspicion. Instant EFT, SnapScan and vouchers are not on the table — it is a card or nothing. Switch international transactions on first and keep the OTP prompt handy.
Then there is the data question, which barely registers overseas and matters enormously here. A text conversation costs almost nothing. A gallery of generated images, refreshing as you scroll, costs a great deal more, and out-of-bundle rates punish the moment you forget. The apps that lead with pictures are the ones to keep on Wi-Fi.
Finally, support. None of these desks run on SAST, so treat every ticket as an overnight round trip and write it accordingly: full detail, screenshots, the last four digits of the card, all in the first message. One well-written query answered by morning beats three vague ones spread across a week of waiting.
- Enable international payments before you upgrade, not after
- Keep image-heavy features for Wi-Fi, not prepaid data
- Send billing queries in the morning, SAST
- Favour browser apps if you share a handset
Why HoneyPot
What separates HoneyPot from the other three
Three differences that showed up quickly once we stopped reading landing pages and started using these apps from here.

You personalise her, you don't queue for her
Most rivals hand you a catalogue of characters somebody else made. Here you set the tone, the interests and the boundaries yourself, and you can change your mind mid-week without starting over.

Nothing installed, nothing in your app library
It runs in the browser, so there is no listing on your phone and no icon for someone borrowing it to notice. On a shared handset that matters more than any privacy policy.

Text-first, so prepaid data survives it
Ordinary chat is light. The image-heavy features are opt-in rather than autoplaying at you, which is the difference between a comfortable evening and an out-of-bundle surprise.
Test it properly before you pay anything
Set up a companion and run a real conversation on the free tier. Nothing goes near your card until you have decided the app is worth an international charge.
- Personalise her without joining a plan
- No card details asked for on the free tier
- Cancel from the account page, not by email

How it works
Build her in about a minute
Pick a personality, a tone and a few interests. Because it all happens in the browser, there is nothing to download, nothing to update and nothing sitting on your home screen afterwards.
Chat free before you spend a cent
The free tier is where you realise whether the conversation actually holds up. Do that first stretch on Wi-Fi if you are watching your data, then decide.
Clear the card, then upgrade
If you do go paid, switch international transactions on in your banking app first and keep your phone nearby for the OTP. That single step is what stops most South African cards at an overseas checkout.
Two-minute shortlist
Which of the four suits you?
Four questions about how you connect and what you are after. No sign-up, and the answer is not always us.
Question 1/4
What are you actually after?
What members say
Real conversations, real connection
“My card was declined twice before I realised international payments were switched off in my banking app. Turned them on, paid, done. HoneyPot itself has been the smoothest of the lot on our line.”
“I tried the image-heavy ones on mobile data and regretted it by the third day. This one stays readable on text alone, which is why I kept it and dropped the other two.”
“Support answers overnight, so you learn to send your question before bed and read the reply with your coffee. Annoying, but at least the chat picks up exactly where load-shedding left it.”
